“Because I have the support of a community, I feel less alone. I can get through this. Now that I have a space to talk about these issues, it’s not constantly floating around in my brain. It doesn’t occupy my every thought. I now have more motivation for life.”

“Last week I reached out to my sister and for the first time started to speak up in my own voice, whereas before (FHFM), I would say anything to please them. Now I’m able to be assertive rather than passive. Now I can say ‘no, that’s enough.’ It felt so empowering not to stay silent. I’m a little late, but it’s better than never. I feel at peace with myself now.”

“It's difficult because all of my surroundings are Muslims telling me I'm crazy and there's something wrong with me. So it was such a relief to meet you guys - to know I'm not the only one, that there are people like me.”

“I felt so isolated (even with friends) because I can't speak about these issues with them. So it's great to have a community here - a safe space with people who understand. It's been so validating.”

“I had lost myself, but now I can make sense of how to move forward.”

“Since therapy
I have completely quit smoking and for the first time in the last 4 years, I'm going to the gym.
I feel like someone who can make difficult decisions and face any hardships.”

About the FounderThough I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, I endured similar struggles to girls born in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iran.
When I was 19, I was forced to marry a member of Al Qaeda. I quickly became pregnant with my baby girl. Not wanting my daughter to have the same life I did- I planned a daring escape. My mother threatened to have me killedfor getting divorced, living alone, taking off my hijab, and sullying the family honor.
This experience inspired me to start Free Hearts Free Minds, to help people who are as scared and isolated and hopeless as I was. To know more about my story, read my book ‘Unveiled’. And to help people like me escape seemingly inescapable oppression, become a regular donor – you can not only save a life, you can give the gift of hope and freedom. |
